St. Louis Things to Do
In the wonderful city of St. Louis things to do are around every corner. Here are just a few examples to whet your appetite.
There are so many great things to do on your St. Louis vacation, it’s probably easier to tell you what not to do – don’t stay in bed all day and don’t sit by a pool all day, do get out and about, meet some of the wonderfully friendly characters in the charming neighborhoods and explore some of the unique treasures which this vibrant city has to offer. After all, when Judy Garland sang "Meet me in St. Louis" there were plenty of good reasons why.
10 Things to Do in St. Louis
In no particular order, (don’t want to upset anybody) and because, well, there’s something for everybody so it’s difficult to prioritize.
- Cathedral Basilica – This wonderful cathedral has the largest collection of mosaic art in the world. Whether you’re religious (you can attend mass daily), one of those arty types or just a normal person who appreciates something special, you’ll come out of there with a crick in your neck from gazing upwards at this awe inspiring place – it truly is breathtaking.
- Gateway Arch – Rising an unbelievable 630 feet over the Mississippi River, this is the tallest monument in the nation, and you can ride to the top of it in a tram, four million people visit the monument every year so it ought to be quite safe.
- The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum – Great for kids of all ages, from 1 to 100, there are hundreds of hands on stuff to do and some great exhibitions. Who said learning isn’t fun? Well, they’ve not be to the Magic House in St. Louis, obviously.
- St. Louis Zoo – This zoo has more than 700 species which represent all continents of the world, right here in St. Louis, in Forest Park actually, and you’ll never believe it, it’s absolutely FREE and it’s celebrating the centenary in 2010. Well worth the trip, why not go along and find out all about it.
- Anheuser-Busch Brewery – The world famous Budweiser Clydesdales are right here in St. Louis, along with lots of other things. For anybody that loves Budweiser, loves horses and loves a great day out, you can’t beat it, you can tour around the Brew house, visit the stables and go into the lager cellar, of course, there’s a great gift shop too so that you can buy yourself a little memento of your trip.
- Six Flags St. Louis – No vacation is ever really complete without the adrenalin rush of a roller coaster ride, and at Six Flags St. Louis there’s plenty to get your heart racing with non stop high speed thrills around every corner, roller coasters to get the blood pumping and kids stuff for the younger members of the family, in fact, there’s something for everybody.
- Scott Joplin House State Historic Site – One of the most famous ragtime composers of all time, visit his home in St. Louis and learn all about one of St. Louis famous sons – remember the Entertainer? Bet you can hum it too.
- Mississippi River Boat ride – Cruise the Mississippi on the Tom Sawyer or the Becky Thatcher, take an hour sight seeing tour (you’ve just got to really) or book a moonlight dinner cruise – now that’s living.
- Live Blues – If there’s one thing St. Louis is famous for it’s the blues, so why not enjoy some live blues at one of the many bars, taverns and clubs. It’s always happening and it just makes you feel so gooooood.
- Route 66 – Drive down Route 66, visit some of the many shops on the Mothers Road and lose yourself for an hour or two ("lose yourself" is different to "get lost," there’s plenty of sign posts).
Staying in St. Louis and Florida vacation rentals has become all the rage as of late. Though they might be a little more pricey than the hotels by the highway, they offer you more space, more places for your stuff, and just a feeling like you’re at home with a better view. The city of Saint Louis has its merits, but at the end of a long day, you want to fall asleep in a place that is accommodating and luxurious – and the local motel just can’t provide those accommodations, now can they?
